A Blog Post from T.J. Cloutier

Tom Macvoy was our team star. (Kathy Liebert went out after I did when she took a draw to a flush and didn't get there.) He went on to become one of the chip leaders at the end of the day, and made the final table. At the final table, players would take two time-outs to consult with one of their team members. I was Tom's consultant/coach. The first time, Tom was the little blind six-handed, and the action was passed around to the button. The button raised. Tom had K-Q and asked my opinion on whether he should call the raise. "There's no way in the world that your K-Q can be good here. The button has plenty of chips. He doesn't have to make the bet, and you don't have to make the call because you have plenty of chips, too." So, Tom folded and the guy showed him pocket kings.

A little while later, Tom raised the pot from the small blind with A-2, and he got re-hashed by the big blind, so he threw that one away too. Finally, when they were playing $20K-$40K blinds, he made a little raise again from the small blind against the big blind, this time with Q-J. He took his second time-out to ask me about the Q-J in this spot, and I told him, "Danny hasn't made a move the whole time, so I'd throw it away." Tom folded again, and rightly so I believe. His opponent, Danny Nelson, went on to become the individual winner of the tournament. There was nothing at all wrong with Tom's raises shorthanded. He just happened to run into a bigger hand behind him every time. He started the final table with about $600,000 and he had about $270,000. Tom represented our team great, and finished sixth overall.
